Francisco Pastor on JCDecaux’s cloud migration

As we prepare to host our first CIO Europe event in Madrid, Spain in April 2020, our Head of Production for Europe, Craig McKenna, recently spoke to registered attendee Francisco Pastor, CTO at JCDecaux España on the issues in the IT industry which are most prominent in the Iberia region.


With over 25 years experience, Francisco is a leading figure in IT management, Telecommunication and operations in Spain. His achievements include aligning company IT infrastructure with business priorities maximizing ROI and ensuring cost efficiency, has supervised IT Project management and successfully deployed and upgraded network, telecom, data-centers, infrastructure, VoIP Unified Communications and mobile services and has certified Lean Six Sigma Green Belt in CIP (Continuous Improvement Process).


When asked about his current key challenges, Francisco explained ‘as I am responsible for the technology of our company here in Spain, we have a lot of challenges. We have a digitisation project which is a global initiative as well as a key challenge concerning the migration of all of our infrastructure into the cloud which began last year. 


We had a long history of providing IT services to the organisation for more than 30 years and we accomplished that in the last year by providing the best possible services and user experience by embracing the local data centre and provisioning of IT services from our headquarters in Madrid.


A few years ago the corporation started a global programme in order to streamline and maximise our investment in the different countries’ IT services and we chose to migrate all the physical data centres into the cloud. We have a tactical strategic agreement with AWS and right now we are on the road towards the migration process, defining the plan, quick wins and everything that needs to be accomplished before it can take place.


Therefore we are very interested in having or learning about similar initiatives that other companies have worked on already in that space.’


When asked about issues of culture, Francisco did not believe his organisation faced any major concerns: ‘we face the same cultural handicaps that most current organisations already have in terms of training, interconnectivity and reluctance. I believe it is more experience and knowledge about how the new cloud based services already work that is important to us.


So we need to understand the possibilities and target the real accessible cases that others have already deployed and have had success as a result. It is always better to look at what has already been tried and failed and optimise what has worked in other companies to implement these technologies.’
